What is my IP address?

Your public IP address as websites see it, plus your internet provider, approximate location and the details your browser shares.

Your browser

Location is estimated from your IP address by our network provider and is usually accurate to the city or region, not your street. VPNs and mobile networks show the location of their servers.

We read these details from the request your browser already sent and echo them back. Nothing is logged or stored by this tool.

What is an IP address?

An IP address is the number that identifies your connection on the internet, like a return address on an envelope. Your router or phone network shares one public address among your devices. Websites see this public address, not the private 192.168.x.x addresses inside your home.

IPv4 vs IPv6

IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.42 and there are only about 4.3 billion of them. IPv6 addresses look like 2001:db8::1 and there are enough for every device on Earth many times over. Many Canadian providers now give you both; which one you see depends on your network.

Is my IP address private information?

It reveals your provider and rough location, but not your name or home address. Your provider can link it to your account, which is why IP addresses are treated as personal information under Canadian privacy law. A VPN replaces your IP with the VPN server’s.

Checking a VPN? Turn it on and reload: the IP, provider and location should change. Then compare local weather or the time with the weather forecast and the time zone converter.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone find my house from my IP address?

Not from the IP alone. Geolocation is usually accurate to a city or region. Only your internet provider can match an IP to a customer, and it generally needs a legal order to disclose that.

Why is my location wrong?

IP location databases map address blocks to the area where the provider registered or routes them. Mobile networks, VPNs and some providers route through a different city.

Does my IP address change?

Most home connections have a dynamic IP that changes occasionally, such as when the router restarts. Mobile data IPs change often.
